A fixture that fails inspection is a schedule problem, not a price problem. Anyone can quote a light. The narrower question you are really asking when you shop for a hazardous location lighting supplier in Canada is whether the company can prove the fixture matches the classified zone before the electrician hangs it, and produce that proof on paper. Certification, classification, temperature code, photometrics, and lead time are all checkable before a purchase order goes out. CSA listing is the first filter
In Canada, hazardous-area equipment has to be certified for Canadian use. A UL listing on its own is not sufficient for a Canadian install. CSA listing is national, accepted in every province, and is what an inspector expects to find on the nameplate. That single question filters out a surprising share of what shows up in a search for hazardous lighting.
Ask which standards the fixture is listed to, and ask to see them printed on the spec sheet rather than described in an email. The EX-C explosion-proof high bay prints its listings on its own sheet: UL 844 for hazardous locations, CSA C22.2 No. 137 and CSA C22.2 No. 250.0, plus UL 1598 for wet locations, UL 1598A marine outside type, and UL 924 for emergency lighting on the battery-backup configurations. That is the level of detail a supplier should be able to hand you in the first reply, not after a follow-up call.
Ask for Class, Division, and Group in writing
"Explosion proof" is not a specification. It is a category. The specification is four labels together: Class, Division, Group, and temperature code, and a supplier who cannot state all four for the fixture they are quoting has not read the sheet.
A real listing reads out in full. The EX-C, again as an example, is listed for Class I, Division 1, Groups C and D; Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C, and D; Class II, Division 1, Groups E, F, and G; Class II, Division 2, Groups F and G; and Class III. That string tells you exactly which atmospheres it covers and which it does not. If the area drawing calls for Group B hydrogen and the fixture stops at Group C, the answer is no, regardless of how well it is built.

Check the temperature code against your real ambient
The T-code is the maximum surface temperature the fixture reaches, and it is always tied to a stated ambient. The EX-C is rated T4 across an ambient band of -40 °C to 60 °C. Change the ambient and the rating can change with it, which is why "T4" alone is an incomplete answer.
Measure the ambient at the fixture location rather than quoting the room's general temperature. Near ovens, dryers, or furnace lines, the air at the ceiling is often far hotter than the floor. In Class I, Division 2 areas the code also applies an 80 percent margin against the autoignition temperature of the chemical present, so a T-code that looks safely below the AIT can still fail the rule on a borderline pick.
The spec sheet should be public, not on request
A supplier who publishes the spec sheet before you contact them is a supplier who expects it to be checked. Every product on this site carries its own downloadable sheet, and the sheet is where the real numbers live: the EX-B high bay for Class I, Division 2 areas prints a different ambient band for each model variant rather than a single line-wide claim, which is the kind of detail marketing copy tends to flatten.
The durability numbers matter as much as the classification. The EX-C sheet publishes IP66 ingress protection, IK08 impact resistance with the glass cover or IK10 with the wire guard, 1,000 hours of salt spray, a five-year standard warranty, and LED lumen maintenance of L70 greater than 150,000 hours at 55 °C. Each of those is a number you can hold a supplier to. "Heavy duty" is not.
Photometrics beat adjectives
Efficacy is published per fixture, not per brand. The EX-C runs 140 lumens per watt across a 20 W to 280 W range, which works out to 2,800 lumens at the bottom of the range and 39,200 lumens at the top. Two fixtures quoted at the same wattage can deliver very different light, so compare lumens and efficacy, never wattage alone.
For anything larger than a one-for-one replacement, ask the supplier to run the layout instead of estimating fixture count. Send your dimensions through the photometric layout request and you get a computed plan: fixture count, spacing, and point-by-point light levels for your actual building.
Rebates and provincial paperwork
Both major provincial incentive programs require pre-approval before purchase and installation, so the supplier conversation has to happen before the order, not after. Quebec's Hydro-Québec program and Ontario's Save On Energy Retrofit Program each need the spec documentation as part of the application. Worth checking early: DLC qualification is granted per configuration, not per series, and spec sheets typically note that not every variation listed is DLC qualified. Confirm the exact configuration you are ordering is on the DLC list before you build a rebate into the budget.
The two provinces also differ on process. Ontario's ESA inspects the install and expects P. Eng.-sealed drawings and equipment listings on Class I, Division 1 work. Quebec's RBQ leans on contractor self-certification with audits, and Bill 96 requires French safety labelling on fixtures destined for Quebec sites. Distributor or manufacturer: what it changes
A distributor's value is not the factory. It is the match and the paperwork: reading your classification, pulling fixtures from more than one line to fit it, and handing you the certification and the spec sheet that prove the fit. That also means a distributor can tell you when the honest answer is a different fixture than the one you asked for, which a single-line manufacturer generally cannot.

The questions to ask, in order
- Is the fixture CSA listed for Canadian installation, and which standards are printed on the sheet?
- What is the full Class, Division, and Group string, and does it cover the worst-case group in my drawing?
- What is the T-code, and at what ambient is it valid?
- Can I download the spec sheet now, without asking for it?
- What are the IP and IK ratings, the warranty, and the L70 hours at what temperature?
- Will you run the photometric layout for my dimensions, or only quote a fixture count?
- What is the lead time, and is it stated on the quote?
If a supplier answers all seven without stalling, the rest of the purchase is straightforward. If they stall on the first three, the fixture is not specced yet.
Common questions
Is a UL-listed fixture acceptable for a Canadian hazardous location? Not on its own. Canadian installations require certification for Canadian use, and CSA listing is what an inspector expects on the nameplate. Many hazardous-area fixtures carry both UL and CSA listings, which is what you want to see printed on the spec sheet. Confirm the CSA standard numbers are there before ordering, not just a generic claim of certification.
What does a hazardous location lighting supplier actually need from me to quote? The area classification (Class, Division, and Group from your drawing), the mounting height and area to be covered, the ambient temperature at the fixture location, and the voltage available. With those four, a fixture can be matched and priced. Without the classification, nothing can be quoted responsibly, since the rating has to match the zone rather than a guess about it.
How do I tell a real certification from a marketing claim? A real listing names the standard and the scope: UL 844 with the specific Class, Division, and Group string, or a CSA C22.2 standard number, printed on the fixture's own spec sheet. A claim like "explosion proof rated" with no standard, no groups, and no T-code is not a certification. Ask for the sheet, and check that the configuration you are ordering is the one covered.
Does a Division 1 fixture work in a Division 2 area? Yes. Division 1 fixtures are built to contain an ignition and are always acceptable in Division 2 areas. The reverse is never true: a Division 2 fixture cannot be installed in a Division 1 area at any price. Should I buy from a manufacturer or a distributor? It depends on whether one line covers your site. A manufacturer sells what it builds. A distributor matches across lines and documents the match, which matters when a plant has Class I gas areas, Class II dust areas, and unclassified space in the same building. Judge either one on the same evidence: the spec sheet, the listing, and the lead time on the quote.
